Domaine Neferis statement

THE LAND OF WINES FOR OVER 2000 YEARS

The name of Domaine NEFERIS echoes the Phoenician and Roman history not only of Tunisia but also the importance that the region had at that time. Neferis was a fortified Carthaginian city located about thirty kilometers from present-day Tunis.

The City played an important role during the Third Punic War. Already in antiquity, the hills of NEFERIS were the breadbasket and wine cellar of Rome departing from the ancient Gulf of Utica, the first commercial port of the Carthaginian and Roman era.

The Domaine NEFERIS vineyard was created in 2000 on the hills of KHANGUET, in GROMBALIA, on the very spot where the first French vineyard was created in 1878 by Mr. Emile Lançon. It covers an area of 200 hectares of vat vines planted with Syrah, Carignan, Cinsault, Grenache Chardonnay and Muscat d’Alexandrie.

Grape varieties that have shown, over time, a great adaptation to Mediterranean terroirs. The vineyard of Domaine Neferis is, without doubt, the most important and most qualitative vineyard in Tunisia, on the one hand, by the diversity of its grape varieties and, on the other hand, by its moderate planting density, of three thousand vines per hectare, which gives an optimal exposed leaf area for the quality of the wine.

The vineyards

Examination of the soils of the Domaine Neferis vineyard reveals two types of soil particularly suited to growing vines.

The first is a deep soil made up of sandy-loamy alluvial contributions which allows excellent aeration and excellent vegetative development.

The second type of soil is more superficial and clay-limestone in nature.

These types of soil allow the vines to feed reasonably without excess.

Maturity and acidity find a nice balance here. Its semi-continental microclimate, characterized by a significant thermal amplitude, ensures a very good synthesis of phenolic compounds, for red wines, and a perfect balance between freshness and aromatic power, for white and rosé wines.

The Cave

At the cave du Domaine Neferis has been designed to allow the oenologist to carry out different types of vinification and to ensure good preservation of the organoleptic quality of the grapes from reception of the harvest until bottling. In addition, the cellar has two coaxial tubular exchangers for cooling grapes, must and wine.

All vinification and storage vats are thermo-regulated. Temperature control is essential for the production and for the conservation of wines.

In addition, the cellar is equipped with a complete station for the inerting of musts and wines in order to ensure good protection against oxidation.

Finally, Domaine Neferis has invested in a cellar with French oak barrels from world-renowned coopers. In order to give their wines a great complexity, they have selected barrels of different types according to the level of fineness of the grains and the intensity of the toast. The know-how of their teams and the high level of their equipment guarantee our wines of optimal quality.

Soil / Climate

Exploited in sustainable agriculture, the vineyard flourishes on the clay-limestone soils of the maritime border, partially in terraces at an average altitude of 150 meters. The cool climate for the region and significant temperature variations between day and night help maintain perfect balance in the wines.
